AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting (Blended Learning)

L2 Level 2
Part Time
7 September 2020 — 28 May 2021
City Centre Campus, Cardiff

About this course

The AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting covers a range of foundation accounting and finance skills in five mandatory units (240 guided learning hours). Based at our City Centre campus in Cardiff, this qualification will ensure all students are well prepared to progress into a business, finance or professional accountancy career or further education.

Our Online & On Campus approach enables students to benefit from both face-to-face teaching at the college and online lessons available on demand, which is a far more flexible study experience for pupils. In addition to attending face-to-face classes every 2 weeks, learners will also be required to complete online lessons and exercises between each class.

There are shorter qualifications available on this level that can be studied individually. These include:

  • Award in Accounting Software (ref: BSCC2P90)
  • Foundation Certificate in Bookkeeping (ref: BSCC2P91) - built up into the Foundation Certificate in Accounting (ref: BSCC2P92)

What you will study

All units within this Foundation Certificate in Accounting qualification are mandatory. Four units are assessed individually in end-of-unit assessments, alongside a synoptic assessment, which is sat towards the end of the qualification, drawing on and assessing your knowledge and understanding from across the course.

Units include:

  • Bookkeeping Transactions
  • Bookkeeping Controls
  • Elements of Costing
  • Using Accounting Software
  • Working Effectively in Finance

A student completing this qualification will develop accountancy skills in double-entry bookkeeping and basic costing, as well as an understanding of purchase, sales and general ledgers. Students will learn to use accounting software, and will develop the professional skills and behaviours needed to contribute effectively in the workplace. Working in accountancy requires good communication skills, IT skills and understanding of the business environment, all of which are included in the qualification.

The course is vocational and practical in nature and you will learn essential skills relevant to an accounting environment. Lectures are provided for each unit, as well as tutorial support.

To study an AAT course you need to join the AAT as a student member, as well as enrol at the college. The AAT offers a range of benefits for student members including support, help with employment and exclusive discounts.

All assessments in this qualification are:

  • Set and marked by AAT (with the exception of RPL, which is marked by the training provider)
  • Computer based
  • Time limited
  • Scheduled by training providers or assessment venues
  • Take place at approved centres and venues under controlled conditions

To successfully complete this course and be awarded a grade, a student must pass all the mandatory assessments and the synoptic assessment. Unit and synoptic assessments are not awarded grades individually, but the marks achieved in all assessments contribute to the student’s overall grade for the qualification. Pupils must successfully complete four unit assessments and one synoptic assessment to achieve this qualification. The proportion of this qualification assessed by external assessment is 100%.

What our students say

When I came back into education I knew this was the place to go. Moodle is great and there’s a lot of content on there, any questions we have the tutors are very quick in responding.
