Cardiff and Vale College’s Independent Living Skills (ILS) Football Team has won the Colleges Wales Ability Counts Football Tournament and will now represent Wales at the national finals.

Having won the South Wales Ability Counts heats just before Christmas, the CAVC ILS team faced North Wales winners Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor in the Welsh finals, held at the College’s Cardiff International Sports Campus. A tense match was expected as both teams had won all their previous matches.

CAVC started strongly, achieving a 2-0 lead by half time. An equally powerful second half saw the team surge ahead, finally winning 4-0. They will now travel to Nottingham to represent Wales in the Association of Colleges Sport National Championships in April.

CAVC ILS Football Team Coach Barrie Jones said: “Every player contributed and special praise goes to Captain Jac Hayes who made sure all the players showed the values associated with being a CAVC student.

“The Final was played in great spirit with both sides showing sportsmanship all through the match. The squad will now look forward to going to Nottingham in April and representing Wales in the British National Finals.”

Cardiff and Vale College Principal Sharon James-Evans said: “Congratulations to our ILS Football Team – the unbeaten champions of the Ability Counts Football Tournament! Everyone at CAVC will be rooting for you in the UK-wide Finals next in April.”
